Majian is probably one of the earliest forms of board games. Variability is great and you can hardly grow bored from it. Too sad it's often associated with gambling in the current chinese culture, which sometimes hindered its education in the young. As long as you don't play money, it's actually a very good game for the kids. Lots of pattern recognition and probabilities are involved. Personally I think it's perfectly fine even if a first grader knows how to play it.
